Intel is in early talks to buy AI chipmaker SambaNova Systems, a move that underscores how aggressively the once-dominant PC chip giant is trying to claw its way back into the hottest fight in tech: powering artificial intelligence.

Multiple outlets, citing people familiar with the discussions, report the negotiations are preliminary and could still fall apart. But even the possibility of a deal signals Intel’s urgency as Nvidia’s AI hardware has become the default choice for many companies building and running large-scale AI models.

What Intel wants from SambaNova

SambaNova is a U.S. startup known for designing processors aimed at accelerating AI workloads, especially the kind of massive data processing used in deep learning. If Intel lands the acquisition, it would gain technology and engineering talent that could help it ship more competitive AI-focused hardware faster.

According to reports, SambaNova has been exploring strategic options with financial advisers, including a potential sale. The company’s valuation is said to be under $5 billion, still a hefty price tag, but below its peak during the 2021 fundraising boom.

The AI chip market is being rewritten, fast

AI has reshaped the semiconductor industry’s pecking order. Nvidia, long a graphics-chip specialist, has turned its GPUs into the workhorses of modern AI, giving it enormous influence over how data centers are built and how AI software is optimized.

Intel has tried to answer that shift with a mix of internal development and targeted deals, but it hasn’t yet produced a breakout hit that changes the market’s center of gravity. Buying a company like SambaNova would be a bet that Intel can shortcut years of development, and show customers it’s serious about competing for AI infrastructure dollars.

Nvidia and AMD aren’t standing still

Intel isn’t chasing an empty lane. Nvidia continues to roll out new generations of AI accelerators and has built a powerful software ecosystem around them, making it harder for rivals to pry customers away.

AMD, meanwhile, has been pushing deeper into high-performance computing and AI, positioning its own chips as alternatives for data centers looking for more supply and pricing leverage. That leaves Intel trying to differentiate on performance, cost, and the ability to deliver at scale.

Why this deal would matter for Intel

If Intel moves forward, the acquisition would fit a broader strategy: strengthen its AI portfolio by adding specialized chip designs and teams that live and breathe machine-learning workloads. In theory, that could help Intel move from prototypes to production faster, and offer customers more options beyond Nvidia’s dominant lineup.

But the risks are real. Integrating a fast-moving startup into a massive legacy company is notoriously difficult, and the AI chip market is unforgiving: if the hardware misses the performance window, customers move on.

A side story: Intel alumni are shaping the AI debate, too

The reporting also highlights how former Intel leaders are influencing the broader tech landscape. Patrick Gelsinger, Intel’s former CEO, is now an executive at Gloo, where he has promoted a vision of AI shaped by Christian values, an unusual but increasingly visible thread in Silicon Valley’s debates over what AI should do and who it should serve.

For Intel, though, the immediate question is simpler: can it buy its way into a stronger position in the AI arms race, or will the market’s leaders keep widening the gap?
